President Bush says he will oversee an investigation into what went wrong with the government's response to Hurricane Katrina.
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting today (Tuesday), Mr. Bush said he wants to make sure the government can respond properly in the event of another major storm or a terrorist attack.
The president and his aides have come under strong criticism for the slow pace of relief efforts, some of it from members of Mr. Bush's own Republican Party.
Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins said today that she finds it hard to understand how the country could be so unprepared for a catastrophe. She said the Senate Homeland Security Committee will investigate shortcomings in the hurricane response.
A White House spokesman said the Bush administration would not engage in what he termed "the blame game."
Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton (of New York) and other congressional leaders have called on Mr. Bush to set up an independent "Katrina Commission" to probe the government's response.
