Exactly 60 years to the minute after Japan's Emperor Hirohito announced surrender ending World War Two, his son, Emperor Akihito, bowed his head today (Monday) for a minute of public silent prayer.
Emperor Akihito stood with Empress Michiko at a national memorial ceremony facing a large arrangement of bright flowers as he read a brief statement.
The Japanese ruler said that looking back on history, he ardently hoped the horrors of war will never be repeated.
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said in the televised ceremony that Japan caused great damage and pain to people in many countries, especially its Asian neighbors.
In the presence of the emperor, Mr. Koizumi did not use the stronger language that appeared in his written statement earlier in the day in which he expressed "deep remorse" and a "feeling of sincere apology."
