China Receives Last Shipment of Food from UN Agency - 2005-04-08

China has received a last shipment of grain from the World Food Program, ending the country's 25 years as a WFP aid recipient.

A ship carrying 43-thousand tons of Canadian grain docked Thursday in the southern city of Shenzhen.

The Chinese state news agency (Xinhua) says the wheat will be distributed in food-for-work programs in four provinces.

The WFP has provided China with aid valued at almost a billion dollars, supporting more then 30 million people.

But after 25 years of economic reforms, the U.N. food agency says China no longer needs the help.

Instead, it is expected to increase its own contributions to the WFP and share its expertise and commitment with other countries.
