미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 중동사람들은 지난 몇 달 동안 자유가 인류의 보편적인 열망이라는 사실에 논란의 여지가 없다는 점을 분명하게 보여 주었다고 말했습니다.
미 의회 하원 국제관계 위원회의 민주당 측 최고위급 위원인 탐 랜토스 의원도 라이스 장관의 말에 동의했습니다. 란토스 의원은 최근 미국의 소리에서 열린 기자회견에서, 중동에서 민주적 변화에 대한 열망의 증거들은 명백하다고 말했습니다.
“레바논 사람들 사이에서는 라피크 하리리 전 레바논 총리의 끔찍한 암살 사건에 뒤이어, 오랫동안 억눌린 채 갇혀 있던 민주적인 감정이 폭발하는 것을 우리는 목격했습니다. 지난 몇 주일 사이에 우리는 이집트에서 복수의 후보가 출마하는 대통령 선거를 향한 문이 아주 조금이나마 열리고 있음을 목격했습니다. 심지어는 비 민주적인 사회의 전형인 사우디 아라비아에서도 우리는 아주 제한적인 지방 선거를 목격했습니다. 물론 이 선거는 남자들만 참가하는 것이었지만, 사우디가 나아가는 방향과 추세를 시사하는 것이었습니다.”
란토스 의원은 중동의 일부 국가들이 자치 정부를 달성할 때까지는 어느 정도 시간이 걸릴 것이라고 말했습니다. 그러나, 란토스 의원은 민주주의를 위한 준비가 돼 있는 나라 가운데 하나는 이란이라고 말했습니다.
“이란에 비해 전체 인구의 대다수가 그렇게 명백하게 국가 지도부보다 앞선 생각을 갖고 있는 나라는 거의 없습니다. 이란은 지구상에서 가장 뛰어난 재능을 가진 남자와 여자들로 이루어진 나라 가운데 하나입니다. 모든 징후들이 분명하게 보여주고 있듯이, 이란 국민의 대부분은 국민을 억압하려고 기도하는 중세식의 신정주의 정권과 어울리지 않습니다.”
란토스 의원은 이란 국민을 위해 자신이 바라는 것은 우크라이나에서 부터 레바논에 이르기 까지 강력하게 불었던 자유의 바람이 이란에도 도달해, 이란 국민들이 점진적으로 민주적이고 개방적이며 자유로운 사회로 나아가는 국제적인 움직임에 합류하는 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령도 같은 희망을 피력했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이란이 중동 전역에서 이루어지고 있는 변화에 동참하는 날을 고대하고 있다고 말했습니다. 이란 정권은 자유를 갈망하는 이란 국민들의 목소리를 들어야만 한다고, 부쉬 대통령은 강조했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says that in recent months "the people of the Middle East have been demonstrating with incontrovertibility that…freedom and liberty are universal aspirations."
Tom Lantos, the senior Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives International Relations Committee, agrees. Speaking at a news conference at the Voice of America, Congressman Lantos said that the evidence of the desire for democratic change in the Middle East is obvious.
"Following the appalling assassination of the former Prime Minister [Rafik Hariri] of Lebanon…we have seen an explosion of long-suppressed, pent-up democratic sentiments among the people of Lebanon. We have seen in recent weeks the opening of the door ever-so slightly in Egypt towards multi-candidate presidential elections. Even in Saudi Arabia - no paragon of democratic societies - we have seen some very limited local elections, restricted, of course, to men only, but indicating the direction and the trend."
Mr. Lantos said it will be "some time" before some nations in the Middle East achieve self-government. But he says one nation that is ready for democracy is Iran.
"There are few places. . . .where the majority of the population is so palpably so far ahead of the leadership of the country than in Iran…Iran represents one of the most talented pool of men and women on the face of this planet, most of whom, as all indications clearly demonstrate, are not in sync with a theocratic medieval regime which attempts to suppress them."
"My hope for the Iranian people," said Mr. Lantos, "is that the winds of freedom which have blown so strongly from the Ukraine to Lebanon will reach Iran, so that the Iranian people…join the global movement toward increasing democratic, open and free societies."
President George W. Bush has expressed the same hope: "We look forward to the day when Iran joins in the…changes taking place across the region," says Mr. Bush. "The Iranian regime should listen to…the voice of the Iranian people, who long for their liberty."
