Taiwan Protesters Denounce China's Anti-Secession Law - 2005-03-26

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian and hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Taipei today (Saturday) to oppose a new law in China that authorizes military action if the island seeks formal independence.

Taipei's ruling Democratic Progressive Party said the rally was meant to convey a message to Beijing that Taiwan is united against aggression from the mainland.

Protesters marched along 10 different routes converging on the boulevard in front of the presidential office building. Each route represented an article in the controversial anti-secession law passed by China's parliament last week.

The United States, among other countries, is concerned Beijing may use the bill to declare war on Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.
