Cuban President Fidel Castro says an oil field containing up to 100 million barrels has been discovered off Cuba's northern coast.
Mr. Castro made the announcement in a closed-door speech to Cuba's national assembly, parts of which were aired by Cuban television late Saturday.
Mr. Castro said the oil field is located off the coast of Santa Cruz del Norte, east of Havana. He said production at the field could start during 2006.
The find is good news for Cuba, which currently imports about half of the 150,000 barrels of oil it consumes each day.
