Thanks to the government of Colombia, Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, the former head of Colombia's Cali cocaine cartel, is now in custody in the United States. He will stand trial for conspiracy to smuggle and distribute tons of cocaine and for obstruction of justice by murdering witnesses.
Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela was extradited to the U.S. from a Colombian prison, where he and his brother Miguel were serving time on drug trafficking charges. The charges are at the center of a fourteen-year investigation into the Rodriguez Orejuela family's multi-billion dollar drug-smuggling and money-laundering business. U.S. authorities say the brothers were at one time responsible for eighty percent of the global cocaine supply. Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela and three other senior cartel members are expected to be extradited soon to the U.S.
The prosecutor in the case, U.S. Attorney Marcos Jimenez, says the trial will be a milestone in the fight against illegal drugs.
"When it comes to the world of narcotics traffickers and the prosecution of drug cases, it simply does not get any bigger than this. This is a very significant moment in our nation's war on drugs. This is the biggest extradition that our office, and probably the entire country, has ever had."
The Rodriguez Orejuela trial would not be possible without cooperation between the U.S. and the government of Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe. President George W. Bush says cooperation between the U.S. and Colombia will continue.
"Our two nations share in the struggle against drugs. The drug traffickers who practice violence and intimidation send their addictive and deadly products to the United States. Defeating them is vital to the safety of our peoples and to the stability of this hemisphere."
The U.S. has spent nearly seven-hundred million dollars in Colombia this year alone, much of it on counter-drug programs to reduce the scourge of illegal drugs. This includes aerial herbicide spraying of cocoa leaves used to make cocaine.
"Since the year 2000 when we began Plan Colombia," said President Bush, "the United States has provided more than three-billion dollars in vital aid. My nation", he said, "will continue to help Colombia prevail in this vital struggle."
