최근 코소보에서 심각한 폭력사태가 일어나고 있습니다. 폭력사태로 28명이 살해되고, 6백 여명이 부상했습니다.
수백채의 세르비아 가옥과 수많은 교회들이 파괴됐습니다. 세르비아에서 과격한 시위자들은 경찰이 질서를 회복하라고 명령하기 전에 2곳의 회교사원을 불질렀습니다.
지난 3월 16일 카글라비차에서 한 세르비아 청년의 총격과 3월 17일 미트로비차 강에 3명의 알바니아게 청년이 빠져 죽은 후에 지난 1999년 이후 최악의 싸움이 벌어졌습니다.
세르비아인들이 그 청년들을 강물로 밀어넣었다고 비난하는 소문이 나돌았습니다. 현재 코소보에 파견돼 있는 유엔 대표단이 진상을 조사하고 있습니다.
미 국무부의 아담 이렐리 부대변인은 코소보의 정치 지도자들이 그들의 소속원들에게 폭력을 자제하도록 하라고 촉구했습니다. 이렐리 부대변인은 “모든 정파들은 정치적 분쟁을 해결하기 위한 수단으로서 폭력을 종식시킬 책임이 있다”고 말했습니다.
처음부터 코소보의 안정을 유지하기 위해 파견된 NATO 주도의 다국적평화유지군인 [K-FOR]는 코소보 사태를 안정시키기 위해 노력했습니다. 미국과 다른 NATO 회원국들로부터 파견된 3천명의 다국적 평화유지군은 폭력이 가라앉도록 이미 현지에 파견된 1만 8천명의 군대에 합류했습니다.
최근 프리스티나와 베오그라드의 관리들은 폭력사태의 진정을 요구해 왔습니다. 현재 폭력 책임자를 가려내기 위해 조사가 진행중이며 몇몇 용의자들이 체포됐습니다.
코소보 지도자들은 폭력으로 파괴된 곳의 재건을 지원하겠다고 다짐하고 있습니다. 미트로비차 시의회의 무르셀 이브라히미 의원은 “코소보의 미래는 서로 증오하는 사람들이 아니라, 서로 용서하는 사람들의 손에 달려있다”고 말했습니다.”
이제 코소보 주민들은 증오와 폭력이 난무하는 미래냐, 아니면 현대 유럽의 기준을 받아들이고 다른 유럽국가들과 통합을 이루어가느냐 하는 데 대해 그들이 원하는 미래가 어떤 것인지 깊이 생각해야 할 때가 되었습니다.

Serious violence flared up recently in Kosovo. Some twenty-eight people were killed, and more than six hundred were wounded. Hundreds of Serbian homes and dozens of churches were destroyed. In Serbia, violent demonstrators set fire to two mosques before police restored order.
The fighting, the worst since 1999, occurred after the shooting of a Serbian youth in Caglavica on March 16th and the deaths of three ethnic Albanian youths, who drowned in a river in Mitrovica on March 17th. Rumors circulated blaming Serbs, who were accused of chasing the boys into the river. The United Nations Mission in Kosovo is investigating.
U.S. State Department deputy spokeman Adam Ereli called on Kosovo's political leaders to urge their constituents to refrain from violence. "All parties," he said, "have a responsibility to end violence as a means for settling political disputes."
From the start, K-FOR, the NATO-led international force responsible for maintaining security in Kosovo, has worked to stabilize the situation. Over three-thousand troops from the U.S. and other NATO nations have joined the nearly eighteen-thousand troops already on the ground to ensure that the violence is contained.
In recent days, officials in Pristina and Belgrade have called for a return to calm. An investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible for the violence, and several people have been arrested.
Kosovar leaders have pledged assistance to rebuild sites that were damaged during the violence. Mursel Ibrahimi, of Mitrovica's municipal assembly, said "the future of Kosovo belongs to those who forgive, not to those who hate."
The time has come for the people of Kosovo to think carefully about what kind of future they want -- one filled with hatred and violence or one that accepts modern European standards and leads to integration with the rest of Europe.
