영국의 [가디언] 신문은 최근 “일반적으로 미국은 세계에서 악의 세력이 아니라 선의 세력이라고 믿고 있는 영국 유권자들이 62%에 이르는 등 영국의 여론은 압도적으로 친미 성향임을 보여주는” 조사 결과를 보도했습니다.
이같은 조사 결과는 조지 부쉬 미국 대통령이 국빈 방문을 위해 영국에 도착한 것과 때를 같이해 보도됐습니다. 아프가니스탄과 이라크 그리고 그밖의 다른 곳에서 진행되고 있는 미국 주도 연합국들의 노력과 관련해, 부쉬 대통령은 “현재 세계 도처에서 벌어지는 위험들에 대처하는데 있어서 유엔 결의안으로는 충분치 못하며, 여기에는 결연한 의지가 필요하다”고 강조했습니다.
“미국과 영국은 지금까지 유엔이 엉뚱한 데로 탈선하지 못하도록 하며, 과거 국제연맹의 운명을 되풀이하지 않도록 최선의 노력을 기울여 왔고, 또 앞으로도 그럴 것입니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 사담 후세인 정권을 제거하려는 연합국의 결단은 적절한 무력 사용이었다고 말했습니다.
“호화로운 궁전과 고문실, 육중한 후세인 동상과 집단 매장지 등을 체험한 바티스트 당 치하의 이라크 국민들은 이제 도망친 독재자 후세인을 결코 그리워하지 않습니다. 이라크 사람들은 후세인의 몰락을 환호하고 있습니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 이라크에서 임무가 완수되고 이라크 인들이 그들의 주권을 되찾기까지 미국은 이라크를 떠나지 않을 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.
“이라크에서 민주주의가 실패할 경우, 이라크 국민은 또다시 비참한 신세로 되돌아갈 것이며, 이라크는 우리를 파괴하려고 하는 테러리스트들의 손에 넘어가게 될 것입니다. 우리는, 단지 악당과 암살자 무리들 앞에서 퇴각하자고 이라크의 심장부로 수백마일을 진격해 오고, 수많은 사상자를 내며, 또 2천 5백만의 이라크인들을 해방시킨 것이 아닙니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 “우리의 의지가 확고하며, 우리의 말이 선량하고, 이라크 국민이 결코 자유를 포기하지 않을 것이기 때문에 이라크에서 민주주의는 반드시 성공을 거둘 수 있을 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

Britain's Guardian newspaper has published the results of a survey showing that "that public opinion [in Britain] is overwhelmingly pro-American with sixty-two percent of [British] voters believing that the U.S. is 'generally speaking, a force for good, not evil, in the world.'"
The survey was released as President George W. Bush arrived in Britain for a state visit. Referring to U.S.-led coalition efforts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere, President Bush said, "It is not enough to meet the dangers of the world with [United Nations] resolutions. We must meet those dangers with resolve":
"America and Great Britain have done, and will do, all in their power to prevent the United Nations from solemnly choosing its own irrelevance and inviting the fate of the League of Nations."
President Bush said the coalition's decision to remove the Saddam Hussein regime was an appropriate use of force:
("The inhabitants of Iraq's Baathist hell, with its lavish palaces and its torture chambers, with its massive statues and its mass graves, do not miss their fugitive dictator. They rejoiced at his fall."
The U.S., says President Bush, will not leave Iraq until the mission is completed and Iraqis have regained their sovereignty:
"The failure of democracy in Iraq would throw its people back into misery and turn that country over to terrorists who wish to destroy us.... We did not charge hundreds of miles into the heart of Iraq and pay a bitter cost of casualties and liberate twenty-five million people, only to retreat before a band of thugs and assassins."
"Democracy will succeed in Iraq," said President Bush, "because our will is firm, our word is good, and the Iraqi people will not surrender their freedom."
