Confirmation hearings for President-elect Barack Obama's picks for his Cabinet began today (Thursday)with the nominee for health and human services secretary, Tom Daschle.
The former Democratic senator (from the central state of South Dakota) appeared before the Senate Health (Education, Labor and Pensions)committee to answer questions about his plans for reforming the U.S. health care system.
In his statement, Daschle noted that nearly one of every six Americans does not have health insurance, and that the current financial crisis could make the problem worse.
Daschle served for 26 years in the Congress, and published a book this year on reforming the U.S. health care system.
Mr. Obama also picked Daschle to head a new White House office of Health Reform.
On Friday, Mr. Obama's pick to head the Labor Department, Representative Hilda Solis, will appear before the Senate Health committee.
The president-elect's Cabinet nominees all must be approved by a vote in the full Senate.
