카르자이 대통령은 22일 아프간을 방문 중인 멀린 의장에게 추가 미군이 어디에 배치될 지, 또 어떤 활동에 참여하게 될 지 등을 아프간 정부와 반드시 논의해야 할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
멀린 의장은 앞서 20일, 미국은 2009년 중반까지 2만 명에서 3만 명의 미군을 아프가니스탄에 추가로 파견할 것이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has urged the United States' top military officer to coordinate better with his government over deployment of up to 30-thousand new U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
According to a statement by his office, Mr. Karzai today (Monday) told visiting Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that the Afghan government must be consulted about where the troops are deployed and what kind of operations they engage in.
Mullen said Saturday that Washington will send 20-thousand to 30-thousand additional troops to Afghanistan by mid-2009, roughly doubling current U.S. troop levels.
Mr. Karzai's office quoted the U.S. admiral as saying most of the new forces will be deployed in areas with little security where Taliban and Al-Qaida militants are active, especially along the Pakistani border.
