미국이 내년에 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군을 두 배로 늘릴 것이라고 미군 최고위 인사가 밝혔습니다. 마이크 뮬렌 미국합동참모본부 의장은 20일 아프간의 수도 카불에서 기자들에게 내년 중반까지 3만 명의 미군이 아프간에 증파될 것이라고 말했습니다.
현재 아프간 주둔 미군은 3만1천명 수준입니다. 뮬렌 의장은 미군 증파가 성공적으로 이루어지기 위해서는 아프가니스탄의 개발과 정부효율 증진이 추진돼야 한다고 덧붙였습니다.
미군 당국은 3천명의 병력으로 구성된 미 공군 여단을 내년 초 아프간에 추가 파견하는 안을 미 정부가 이미 승인했다고 밝혔습니다.
앞서 데이비드 맥키어넌 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군과 나토군 사령관은 탈레반 반군 소탕을 위해 최소 2만 명의 추가 병력이 필요하다며 추가 파병을 요청한 바 있습니다.

The top U.S. military officer says the United States may double the number of troops deployed in Afghanistan next year.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mike Mullen, told reporters in Kabul today (Saturday)that up to 30-thousand additional troops could arrive by the middle of 2009.
The U.S. currently has 31-thousand troops serving in Afghanistan.
Mullen said more must be done to promote development and effective governance in Afghanistan for the troop build-up to be successful.
U.S. military officials say Washington has already authorized an additional combat aviation brigade of nearly three-thousand troops expected to deploy early next year.
The commander of U.S. and NATO forces, U.S. General David McKiernan, has requested at least four more brigades, or roughly 20-thousand troops, to battle the rising Taliban insurgency.
