바락 오바마 미국 대통령 당선자는 19일 차기 정부 과학 기술 관련 주요 각료를 임명하면서 미국이 과학 기술 분야를 통해 지도적 위치를 회복하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
오바마 당선자는 이날 라디오 주례연설을 통해 존 홀드런 하버드대 환경정책학과 교수를 백악관 과학기술정책국 국장 겸 대통령 과학기술보좌관으로 임명하고 해롤드 바머스 1989년 노벨상 수상자와 에릭 랜더 박사를 백악관 과학기술위원회 공동 위원장으로 각각 임명했습니다.
오바마 당선자는 홀드런 교수를 기후와 에너지 분야에서 잘 알려진 과학자로, 그리고 바머스를 암 연구로 노벨상을 수상한 인물로 소개했습니다. 오바마 당선자는 그외에도 랜더 박사가 인간게놈 지도를 작성하는 데 일조했으며 이는 세계최고의 과학적 업적이라고 평가했습니다. 오바마 당선자는 또한 제인 루브첸코 오리건 주립대 교수를 국립해양대기청 청장에 내정했습니다.

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama says his administration will restore America's place as a world leader in science in technology, as he announced key members of his science and technology team.
In his weekly radio address today (Saturday), Mr. Obama announced the appointment of three people to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology - John Holdren, Harold Varmus, and Eric Lander.
Mr. Obama said Holdren is a renowned physicist known for his work on climate and energy. He said Varmus is a Nobel Prize winning scientist in cancer research. He said Lander is a driving force in mapping the human genome (the DNA content of an organism), which Mr. Obama described one of the world's greatest scientific achievements.
The President-elect also named Jane Lubchenco as head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agency devoted to conserving marine and coastal resources and monitoring the weather. Mr. Obama described Lubchenco as an internationally known environmental scientist and ecologist.
