The White House says an "orderly" bankruptcy is one option under consideration for troubled U.S. automakers, as the Bush administration tries to work out a way to help the companies.

The "Big Three" auto manufacturers (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler)have asked for 14 billion dollars in government loans, and White House spokeswoman Dana Perino says the Bush administration is close to working out an agreement.

The comments come one day after America's third-largest automaker, Chrysler, announced it will close all 30 of its plants for at least a month, beginning Friday.

U.S. automakers traditionally shut down for some time over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. But Chrysler said it is closing for a longer-than-usual period because of plummeting demand for new vehicles.

The car companies have been hurt by the worst sales figures in decades, as the U.S. economy fell into recession.
