미국의 바락 오바마 대통령 당선자는 16일 교육부 장관에 개혁가로 알려진 '아니 던컨' 시카고 교육감을 내정했습니다.
오바마 당선자는 던컨 교육감이 개혁한 공로를 인정받고 있는 시카고의 공립학교 가운데 한 학교에서 기자회견을 갖고 내정을 발표했습니다.
던컨 내정자는 지난 2001년부터 7년간 미국에서 3번째로 큰 교육구인 시카고의 교육감으로 활동해 왔으며, 오바마 당선자의 가까운 친구로 알려져있습니다.
오바마 당선자는 미국이 21세기의 경제 지도국의 위치를 유지하기 위해서는 공 교육 체계의 개선이 필수적이라고 강조한 바 있습니다.
오바마 당선자는 또 16일 미국 경제 악화에 관한 더 많은 증거가 제시된 새로운 보고서가 발표된 가운데, 티모시 가이스너 재무부장관 내정자를 포함한 경제 팀과 만났습니다.

President-elect Barack Obama has selected the public schools chief from the city of Chicago to head the U.S. Department of Education.
Mr. Obama today (Tuesday)named Arne [pron. Ar-`NEE]Duncan, who is known as a reformer, as his choice for education secretary. Mr. Obama announced his pick during a news conference at one of the schools Duncan is credited with reforming in Chicago.
Duncan has headed the nation's third-largest school system since 2001, and is a close friend of the president-elect.
Mr. Obama said improving the public education system is essential for the United States to remain a global economic leader in the 21st century.
Mr. Obama also is meeting with members of his economic team today (Tuesday), including his choice for treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner. The meeting comes as new reports show more evidence the U.S. economy is getting worse.
