The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to cut the key interest rate today (Tuesday), as the central bank continues efforts to stem the nation's free-falling economy.
The Fed's Open Market Committee is expected to cut the current one percent interest rate by at least a quarter percentage point and more likely a half percentage point to one of the lowest rates on record.
In addition to the rate cut, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is expected to announce a series of additional steps the bank is preparing to take to prevent an economic collapse. Among the steps being considered is purchasing large amounts of U.S. government bonds to inject more cash into the economy to encourage lending.
