이집트의 최대 통신사인 오라스콤 텔레콤은 15일부터 북한에서 이동통신 서비스를 개시할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
오라스콤 텔레콤은 향후 3년에 걸쳐 이동통신 사업 권과 기본 설비를 위해 북한에 4억 달러를 투자할 계획입니다.
하지만 북한 주민들이 새로운 휴대전화 서비스에 접근할 수 있을 지는 확실치 않습니다. 김정일 국방위원장이 이끄는 공산 북한 정부는 대부분 가난에 빠져 충분한 식량을 구하기 위해 노력하고 있는 주민들을 계속 엄격히 통제하고 있습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 휴대전화 미개척 시장인 북한 진출에 대한 오라스콤 텔레콤의 전망으로 지난 주 카이로 증권 시장에서 오라스콤의 주가는 9.8% 폭등했습니다.

Egypt's biggest telecommunications company says it will launch a mobile phone network in North Korea on Monday.
Orascom Telecom plans to spend 400 million dollars on a cellular license and infrastructure for its (3G) mobile phone services over the next three years.
It is unclear what access North Koreans will have to the new mobile phone service. The communist government of leader Kim Jong Il keeps tight control over its people, many of whom are mired in poverty and struggling to find enough food.
Despite that, the prospect of moving into the uncharted mobile phone territory made Orascom's shares soar (9.8 percent) on the Cairo stock market his past week.
