유럽 정상들은 12일 온실가스 배출량을 줄이는 야심찬 계획을 승인했습니다.
유럽연합의 순회의장국인 프랑스의 니콜라 사르코지 대통령은 이날 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 이틀간 열린 유럽연합 정상회담 폐막 전, 유럽연합 만큼 엄격한 규정을 마련한 대륙은 없다고 말했습니다. 사르코지 대통령은 다른 나라들도 지구온난화 해결을 위해 유럽연합의 모범을 따르도록 촉구했습니다.
유럽연합은 오는 2020년 까지 온실가스 배출량을 지난 1990년 수준보다 20% 줄이고 전체 에너지의 20%를 재생가능한 자원으로 전환하는 계획을 세웠습니다. 이번 계획에는 상대적으로 빈곤한 유럽연합 회원국들에 대한 경제적 지원 조항도 포함돼 있습니다.

European Union leaders have approved an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, along with measures to ease the plan's impact on industry and poorer EU states.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, called the agreement historic. He noted that not a single continent has adopted rules as strict as those the EU approved before concluding its two-day meeting in Brussels. He then urged other countries worldwide to follow the union's example to help fight global warming.
The EU plan aims to cut carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and to ensure 20 percent of energy comes from renewable sources by the same year. But it also includes provisions for economic and other aid to the union's poorer members until their economies catch up to those of more prosperous ones.
The European leaders earlier approved a 260-billion-dollar economic stimulus plan to revive the bloc's battered economy.
