버마 군사정부가 최근 형량이 결정된 민주화 인사들을 버마 중심부에서 멀리 떨어진 교도소에 나눠서 수감한 가운데, 한 아시아 인권단체가 이 같은 결정은 사형선고나 다름없다며 강하게 비난했습니다.
버마 정부는 최근 90명의 민주화 인사들을 장기 징역형에 처했으며 그 중 일부 저명 인사들은 버마 외곽의 4개 교도소로 각각 이송했습니다.
아시아인권위원회는 버마 당국의 그 같은 결정은 법적 근거가 없으며 다분히 보복적 성격이 강하다고 주장했습니다.
아시아인권위원회는 또한 외곽 교도소들의 열악한 환경과 가족들의 면회가 어렵다는 점을 고려할 때 이는 사형선고와 마찬가지라고 지적했습니다.

An Asian human rights group says a decision by Burma's military government to send prominent convicted political dissidents to remote prisons across the country is the same as giving them death sentences.
In recent weeks, Burma has sentenced nearly 90 pro-democracy activists to lengthy prison sentences. Some of the most prominent dissidents have been transferred to prisons in remote areas of all four corners of the country.
The Asian Human Rights Commmission says there is no legal or administrative reason for the transfers, and argues that the purpose was clearly vindictive.
The group says that for many, being transferred is a de facto death sentence because of the harsh conditions they will suffer and difficulties family members will face in trying to visit them.
