A human rights organization is urging India to bring charges against police officers who allegedly tortured Muslim men after a series of bomb attacks in Hyderabad last year.

Human Rights Watch (in a statement Tuesday)says the Andhra Pradesh state police force rounded up some 100 Muslims after the bomb blasts in May and August of 2007. The group says police beat some of those detainees severely, subjected them to electric shocks, and hung them upside down. In many cases, the organization charges, police also threatened to torture female relatives of the detainees.

Human Rights Watch says India's government has not prosecuted any of the police involved -- even though authorities admitted that torture took place and provided compensation (of six-hundred dollars each)for the victims.
