유럽연합 집행위원회는 18일, 다음달 예정된 방글라데시 총선에 150명의 선거감시단을 파견하기로 했다고 밝혔습니다.
선거감시단 대표인 스테판 프로바인 씨는, 12월 18일 방글라데시 총선에 감시단을 보내기로 한 결정은 방글라데시 군정부가 공정하고 신뢰할 만한 선거에 도움이 되는 분위기를 만들었다는 판단 하에 이뤄진 것이라고 말했습니다.
유럽 연합은 앞서, 방글라데시에서 비상사태가 해제되지 않는 한 선거감시단을 보내지 않겠다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
이달 초, 방글라데시 임시 정부는 제한적인 선거운동을 허용하기 위해 비상사태 조항을 다소 늦췄습니다. 그러나 이후, 거리 집회나 다른 선거 활동을 금지하는 등 비상사태를 강화했습니다.

The European Commission will send 150 monitors to observe national elections next month in Bangladesh.
The head of the commission's delegation to Bangladesh, Stefan Frowein, said the decision to send observers for the December 18th vote constitutes a recognition that Bangladesh's military-backed government has created conditions conducive to a "fair and credible" election.
The European Union had earlier said it would not send election observers unless the state of emergency was lifted.
Earlier this month, the interim government relaxed provisions of emergency rule to allow limited campaigning. But it later reinforced a ban on street rallies and other campaign events.
On Monday, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who heads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), threatened to boycott the December election unless the government lifted its emergency rule within two days.
