미국의 바락 오바마 대통령 당선자는 자신이 거주하는 일리노이주 주민들에게 그들의 지지와 친절함에 고마움을 표하면서 연방 상원의원 직을 공식 사퇴했습니다.
16일 일리노이주 신문들에 게재된 서한에서 오바마 당선자는 역시 일리노이 주 출신인 애이브라함 링컨 전 대통령을 인용하면서 일리노이 주 주민들에게 고마움을 표하고 지지와 기도를 계속해 줄 것을 당부했습니다.
오바마 당선자는 20여년 전 일리노이 주에 정착한 이후 미국 연방 상원의원으로서 주민들에게 봉사한 것은 최고의 명예와 특권가운데 하나였다고 말했습니다.
한편 오바마 대통령 당선자는 미국시간으로 16일 저녁에 방영될 CBS-TV의 '60분'이라는 프로그램에서 조지 부시 대통령과 의회 의원들이 국내 자동차 업계를 도울 지원 안을 창출하길 원한다고 말했습니다.

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has officially resigned his Senate seat, thanking the people of his homestate of Illinois for their support and kindness.
In a letter published in Illinois newspapers today (Sunday), Mr. Obama quoted former President Abraham Lincoln -- who was also from the state -- in thanking the people of Illinois and asking for their support and prayers.
He said it was "one of the highest honors and privileges" of his life to serve them in the U.S. Senate after arriving in the state more than two decades ago.
It is unclear who Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich -- another Democrat -- will appoint to finish Mr. Obama's Senate term, which ends in 2010.
Meanwhile (in remarks scheduled to air on CBS' "60 Minutes" later today), Mr. Obama told a U.S. broadcaster that he hopes President Bush and lawmakers will create an assistance plan that will develop "a sustainable U.S. auto industry."
