An international rights group says Burma's military-led government has sentenced at least 31 activists to lengthy prison terms in a bid to silence dissent ahead of its 2010 elections.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch says the country's recent sentencing of more than a dozen dissidents to 65-years in prison each, as well as other lengthy terms, is part of a government effort to intimidate the population.

The group says the dissidents include members of a major pro-democracy group, labor activists and Buddhist monks. They were sentenced under laws that criminalize free expression, peaceful demonstration, the forming of organizations and holding foreign currency without permission.

It adds that the government has not left anything to chance, prosecuting lawyers who represent the activists as well.

Human Rights Watch says Burma should immediately exonerate and free the jailed activists.
