Chinese media say provincial and company officials at the center of a tainted egg scare were aware of the problem about one month before it became public.
The "Beijing News" newspaper reported Thursday that egg producer Hanwei Group discovered a toxic industrial chemical in batches of animal feed from a supplier in late September.
Wednesday, officials in the northeastern province of Liaoning revealed that they began recalling batches of the company's eggs on September 27th after inspectors detected elevated levels of the chemical melamine. By the end of the following week, seven shipping containers carrying Hanwei eggs had been recalled from Hong Kong.
It is unclear why officials waited until this week to notify the public. It also appears that officials in Hong Kong may not have been made aware of the problem.
Hong Kong officials first announced the discovery of melamine-tainted eggs from Liaoning on Saturday (October 26th)-- nearly one month after Liaoning officials halted the first egg exports.
