U.S. officials say the Bush administration is considering talks with the Taliban in an effort to stem rising violence in Afghanistan.
A senior State Department official today (Tuesday) said no decisions have been made, but acknowledged that a review of Washington's policy on Afghanistan could lead to direct talks with (what he called) "reconcilable" elements of the Taliban.
The United States has previously rejected the idea of direct talks with the Afghan Islamist movement.
The possible policy shift was first reported today in the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper said U.S. officials believe the plan could help stabilize Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, where security has been deteriorating.
A State Department spokesman (Robert Wood) said any direct U.S. contact with the Taliban would be part of a broader reconciliation process led by Afghanistan.
A White House spokeswoman (Dana Perino) said Washington is reviewing its strategies and is aware of the need for reconciliation. She added that the White House remains skeptical the Taliban would renounce violence and extremism.
