The number of new homes sold in the United States rose
unexpectedly in September, after a period of severe declines in the housing
market that helped spark the current economic crisis.
Today's (Monday's) report from the Commerce Department says new home
sales rose two-point-seven percent after builders slashed prices (by more
than nine percent to a median price of just over 218-thousand dollars).
The latest data is sure to be examined closely by top officials of the U.S.
central bank as they meet this week to consider cutting interest rates.
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to cut the key interest rate further on
Wednesday.
Whatever action the Fed takes will come just before a government report on
Thursday that may show the U.S. economy moving toward a recession.
