Witnesses in Somalia's capital say at least 15 people have
died in the latest fighting between Islamist insurgents and government forces.
Mogadishu residents say insurgents fired artillery rounds at the Somali
presidential palace today (Monday), prompting return fire from
government soldiers.
Most of the deaths occurred when shells landed in Mogadishu's Bakara market,
the scene of many previous clashes between the sides.
Earlier today, aid agencies said recent violence in Mogadishu has displaced
another 37-thousand people and worsened the country's humanitarian crisis.
A joint statement by 52 non-governmental organizations condemned the violence
and criticized all sides for using what the statement called indiscriminate and
disproportional use of force.
The statement said one-point-one million Somalis in all have been displaced by
nearly two years of fighting between insurgents and the Ethiopian-backed government.
