태국 경찰은 수도 방콕에서 수 주에 걸친 수천명의 반 정부 시위를 주도했다는 혐의로 5일 참롱 스리무앙 국민민주주의연대(PAD) 공동대표를 체포했습니다.
태국 경찰은 이보다 앞서 4일에는 역시 PAD 소속의 치아왓 신수옹세를 체포 구금했습니다. 그는 폭동과 음모, 불법 집회를 주도한 혐의를 받고 있습니다.
참롱 대표역시 이와 유사한 혐의를 받고 있습니다.
태국 법에 의하면 폭동 죄는 사형을 언도받을 수 있습니다.
시위자들은 지난 달 방콕의 총리 집무실을 점거하고, 솜차이 옹사왓 현 총리와 그의 전임자들이 부패 혐의로 축출된 탁신 시나와트라 전 총리와 긴밀한 연계를 갖고 있다고 비난하고 있습니다.

Thai police have arrested a key
opposition figure, one of several accused of leading thousands of anti-government
protesters in weeks of demonstrations in the capital.
Authorities arrested Chamlong Srimuang, of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD)
today (Sunday) in Bangkok.
The arrest comes one day after police detained Chiawat Sinsuwongse, also of the
PAD. He faces charges of insurrection, conspiracy, and illegal assembly.
Chamlong is expected to face similar charges.
Under Thai law, insurrection can carry the death penalty.
Protesters have been occupying the grounds of the prime minister's office in
Bangkok for the past month. They accuse both Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat
and his predecessor of being too close to deposed prime minister Thaksin
Shinawatra.
