Top diplomats of six major nations have agreed to reaffirm their policy of sanctions and incentives with regard to Iran's nuclear program.
Foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany reached a compromise in New York today (Friday). They restated previous positions and promised additional steps against Iran as needed.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Iran faces a clear choice between joining the world community if it stops enriching uranium, or facing further sanctions if it does not.
Diplomats of the six nations -- Russia, the U.S., Britain, China, France and Germany -- had planned to meet on the sidelines of the General Assembly this week.
Russia, which prefers further negotiations with Iran over the French and U.S. call for more sanctions, said Tuesday there was no urgency to the matter. Moscow said the meeting should be postponed, so today's talks came as a surprise.
