U.S. President George Bush says Democrats and Republicans will reach agreement on a plan to bail out the struggling financial services industry.
Today (Friday), Mr. Bush acknowledged that disagreements remain. But the Republican President said there is no disagreement that "something substantial must be done."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, said talks will continue until lawmakers get an agreement.
A White House spokeswoman (Dana Perino) said the President has sent top economic officials to continue talks with members of Congress and is contacting key lawmakers personally.
Negotiations broke down Thursday when Republicans in the House of Representatives objected to the cost of the bill. They suggested a government-backed insurance plan could give the markets the reassurance they need at less cost. House Minority Leader John Boehner says many Republicans will not vote for the package unless their proposal gets serious consideration.
The Bush administration has put together a 700-billion dollar proposal intended to restore investor and lender confidence to get the economy growing again.
The bailout plan would allow the government to buy devalued
assets from troubled financial firms. Those bad investments have made banks
reluctant to lend money to businesses and consumers. That lack of credit
threatens to stall the economy.
