이에 앞서 반기문 유엔사무총장은 아프리카 경제발전 속도가10년전에 비해 빨라졌지만 여전히 목표치에 도달하지 못하고 밝힌 바 있으며 이는 이번 총회 의제로 채택됐습니다.
반 총장에게 아프리카 문제를 자문해 주는 체이크 시디 디아라 유엔 사무차장은 성명을 통해 아프리카가 2015년까지 새천년계획에서 설정한 계획을 달성할 것으로 보인다고 밝혔습니다.
23일 유엔총회 마지막 연설을 앞두고 있는 조지 부시 미국 대통령은 22일 오후 뉴욕을 방문합니다. 마흐무드 아마디네자드 이란 대통령 역시 22일 유엔총회 연설을 할 계획입니다.

The United Nations General Assembly is focusing today (Monday) on
Africa's development needs and challenges.
Today's high-level meeting features a new report by U.N. Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon that says Africa's economies are growing faster than they did a decade
ago, but the continent as a whole is still behind on its development goals.
In a statement, the U.N. special adviser on Africa (Cheick Sidi Diarra) said
no country in Africa is likely to achieve all of its Millennium Development
Goals by the target date of 2015.
U.S. President George Bush travels to New York later today, ahead of his final
address to the General Assembly when the general debate opens Tuesday. Iranian
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also is set to address the body on Tuesday.
Protesters are expected to rally in New York against Mr. Ahmadinajad and his
policies.
