지난 시간에 Minnesota의 호수 낚시 이야기를 했었는데요. Leora 선생님이 그 곳에서 여러 사람들하고 이야기를 나눠봤지요?
After we took our boat back into the docking area, we talked with some people that had gotten stopped by the DNR folks.
(우리가 선착장으로 배를 타고 돌아갔을 때, DNR 요원들한테 검문을 받았던 몇몇 사람들하고 이야기를 나눴어요.)
DNR은 천연자원부, 즉 'Department of Natural Resources'를 And they had gotten tickets because the length of the fish that they caught was under the legal limit. You can't keep them if they're under a certain length.
(그 사람들은 잡은 물고기가 법적 기준치보다 길이가 짧아서 위반딱지를 받았어요. 일정 길이 이하인 물고기는 잡아서 보관하고 있으면 안 돼요.)
They have to throw the fish back in the lake if they're not the right limit. And they have to throw them immediately and not have them in their possession.
(기준치에 맞지 않는 물고기는 호수에 다시 놓아줘야 합니다. 그리고 곧 바로 버려야 하고, 즉, 물 속에 던져넣어야 하고 보관하면 안 됩니다.)
물고기를 낚아서 낚시 바늘을 빼고, 물고기의 종류를 확인하고, 길이를 재고, 사진을 찍는 시간은 허용된다고 합니다.
Leora 선생님 일행이 갔던 'Rush Lake'에서는 24인치 (61센티미터)에서 36인치 (약91.4센티미터) 사이의 물고기를 잡아서 보관하는 것은 금지 되어 있습니다.
Leora: What's your name?

Leora: Ed? Where're you from, Ed.
Ed: Blaine, Minnesota.
Leora: What brings you up here this way?
Ed: Fishing.
리오라 선생님이 인터뷰한 사람이 하는 이야기 들리시죠? 호수에 어떻게 올라 왔냐고 했더니, 낚시하러 왔다고 했죠?
I asked him what brought him up this way to the lake.
(호수에 어떻게 올라왔느냐고 물었어요.)
And he said, fishing. And he told me that one of kinds of fish that he likes to catch was a fish called Sunnies.
(낚시하러 왔다고 했어요. 그가 즐겨 낚는 물고기는 'Sunny'라는 물고기예요.)
Sunnies의 다른 이름은 블루길 또는 Sunfish(썬피쉬)입니다. 넓적한 민물 도미라고 생각하시면 될 것 같습니다. 미네소타 지역 사람들은 써니, 월아이, 노던 파이크를 좋아한다고 합니다.
Two of the popular species of fish that people like to catch in the Minnesota area are Walleye and Northern Pike, or they use the expression 'Northern'.
(미네소타 지역 사람들한테 가장 인기 있는 물고기 두 종류는 '눈알 큰 물고기', 즉, 'walleye'하고 'Northern Pike' 즉, '북부민물꼬치고기'라는 물고기입니다. )
And one of the things that I learned in Minnesota is that they have an unofficial state bird.
And can you imagine what that state bird of Minnesota is?
(제가 미네소타에서 알게된 것들 중 하나는 비공식적인 주의 새가 있다는 겁니다.
미네소타 주의 새가 뭔지 상상할 수 있어요?)
It's the mosquito. The mosquitoes are very large up in Minnesota and around a lot.
(바로 모기입니다. 미네소타와 인근 지역에는 모기들이 무척 크고 많이 돌아다녀요.)
모기들이 좀 과장해서 새만큼 크다고 해서 농담으로 하는 이야기이군요.
미네소타 주의 새는 '아비'라고 하는 기러기 모양의 'Common Loon'이라는 새입니다.
I came home with many mosquito bites.
(모기에 많이 물려서 집에 돌아왔어요.)
그리고 어떤 여성분과 이야기를 나눴지요?
Willa: My name is Willa Gadboy. (제 이름은 윌러 갣보이입니다.)
Leora: Oh, well, Willa. It's so nice to meet you. (음, 윌라. 만나서 정말 반가워요.)
Willa: Thank you. Nice to meet you…(고마워요. 만나서 반가워요.)
Leora: Have you lived in Minnesota all your life? (미네소타에 평생 살았어요?)
Willa: No, we've been here 23 years. (아뇨, 우린 여기서 23년 동안 살았어요.)
Leora: Yes? And where did you move from? (그래요? 어디서 이사왔어요?)
Willa: Illnois. (일리노이 주요.)
I interviewed a lady there who's only lived in Minnesota about 23 years.
(미네소타에 23년 정도 밖에 살지 않았다는 여성을 인터뷰했어요.)
And I mentioned that she didn't have an accent when I first heard her speaking to me.
(그녀가 첫마디 하는 것을 듣고 사투리 억양이 없다고 이야기했어요.)
And you can always tell if people have an accent from Minnesota by the way they pronounce 'boat'.
('boat'를 발음하는 걸 보면 미네소타 사투리 억양을 갖고 있는지 항상 구분할 수 있어요.)
I pronounce it boat, but people up there say, 'booooat'.
(저는 그 것을 'boat'라고 발음하는데 미네소타 사람들은 'boooat'로 발음해요.)
Leora: Well, you don't have an accent. (음, 사투리 억양이 없으시군요.)
Willa: I don't? (그런가요?)
Leora: No. (네.)
Willa: We've been here long enough to say 'boooat'. (보오오트라고발음할 정도로 우리는 여기 오래 살았어요.)
Leora: Boooat! And how was your fishing today? (보오오트! 오늘 낚시 어떠셨어요?)
Willa: It was not very good. (별로 재미를 못봤어요.)

미네소타에 20년 정도 살지 않았다는 남성을 인터뷰했습니다.

Man: I can't tell you a whole lot about Minnesota. (저는 미네소타에 대해 아주 많은 이야기를 해드릴 수가 없어요.)
I've only been here 20 years. (저는 여기서 20년 밖에 살지 않았어요.)
Leora: Is that all? (그게 전부인가요?)
Man: Yeah. (네.)
Leora: And you don't really have a Minnesota accent. (미네소타 억양이 별로 없으시군요.)
Man: Of course, I don't. (당연히 없죠.)
Leora: How come you haven't picked up the accent? (어떻게 사투리 억양을 습득하지 않으셨어요?)
I asked him how come he hadn't picked up the accent. So he didn't really answer me.
(어떻게 방언 말투를 갖게 되지 않았냐고 물었어요. 그 남자는 대답을 정확하게 하지 않았어요.)

You could say that. But with fine wine it's not as proper.
그렇게 말할 수야 있지만, 좋은 와인을 가지고 그렇게 하는 건 적절하지 못하다고요.
좋은 와인을 마실 때는 눈으로 색깔을 보고, 코로 향기를 맡고, 입안에 와인을 조금씩 굴리듯 음미하면서 마셔야 한다고 하죠?
