The president's brief comments, televised live today (Thursday) from the White House, were aimed at reassuring nervous investors and the American public.
His remarks come after the Federal Reserve (the U.S. central bank) and central banks from around the world agreed to pump hundreds of billions of dollars into financial markets that have been stunned by the ongoing credit crisis.
The president says the influx of cash, along with this week's bailout of insurance giant American International Group (AIG), was both necessary and important. He also cautioned that the financial markets are still adjusting to the measures.
