Pakistan's foreign minister says officials were not warned about a suspected U.S. missile strike that took place hours after the top U.S. military officer pledged to respect Pakistan's sovereignty.Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters today (Thursday) the Pakistani government had no prior knowledge of missiles reported to have been fired from a U.S. drone (pilotless) aircraft in the South Waziristan tribal region Wednesday. Pakistani officials said at least six people were killed in the attack on a suspected militant compound.
Hours before the strike, the chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, emphasized Washington's commitment to respect Pakistan's sovereignty.
Qureshi today said such incursions by international military forces are unproductive, and he urged cooperation between Pakistan and the U.S. He also said the government remains engaged with the U.S. in fighting terrorism.
