한편 앞서 전세계 증시도 이틀째 급격한 하락세를 보였습니다. 특히 세계 최대 보험기업인 미국 AIG 사가 주택 시장 붕괴에 따른 손실로 위기에 처하면서, 투자자들의 우려를 불러일으키고 있습니다.
AIG사는 세계 100여개 국가에 진출해 있습니다. 15일에는 미국 투자 회사인 리만브라더스의 파산에 따라 전세계 증시가 급락했었습니다.
일본과 홍콩의 주요 주가 지수도 16일 5% 가까이 떨어졌습니다. 러시아는 주가가 10% 이상 급락하면서 주식 거래를 중단시키기도 했습니다. 유럽 증시도 크게 하락한 채 폐장했습니다.

Central banks in Europe, Asia and the United States are pumping billions of dollars into financial markets today (Tuesday) in an attempt to keep the global economic crisis from deepening.
As part of that effort, some economists had expected the U.S. central bank to cut interest rates, but instead the Federal Reserve held rates steady.
Right after that decision, U.S. stock markets declined moderately in volatile trading.
Earlier, other stock market indexes around the world were down sharply for a second day. Investors are worried that the world's biggest insurance company (American International Group) is on the verge of collapse because of major losses in the housing crisis. Many markets plunged Monday following the bankruptcy of a major U.S. investment bank (Lehman Brothers).
On Tuesday, key stock markets in Japan and Hong Kong lost around five percent of their value. Russian officials suspended trading on their main (RTS) stock exchange after prices plunged more than 10 percent. And major European stock indexes were sharply lower at the close of trading.
