An Israeli newspaper quotes Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as saying peace negotiations with Israel are not making progress.
In comments published today (Friday)in the "Ha'aretz" newspaper, Mr. Abbas says the two sides have not agreed on any of the core issues needed for a final status agreement. Those would include the status of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees, Jewish settlements and the borders of a future Palestinian state.
He said he doubts a peace deal will be reached by the end of 2008.
An Israeli spokesman, Mark Regev, says there are still problems, but says the talks have made a lot of progress.
Another potential obstacle to progress is that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert plans to resign next week over a corruption scandal. Mr. Abbas said he will continue to work with whoever succeeds him.
