페트라우스 사령관은 이번 주초 한 인터뷰에서, 바그다드의 개선된 치안 상황이 유지된다면, 미군은 내년 7월까지 전투병력을 바그다드에서 철수할 것이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
미군 당국 관계자들은 부시 대통령의 최고 국방 보좌관들이 이라크에서 1개 여단을 이라크에서 철수하는 방안을 건의했다고 말했습니다. 이들은 또 내년 초 1개 전투 여단을 이라크가 아니라 아프가니스탄에 파병할 것을 건의한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

The White House says President George Bush is likely to announce next week his
decision on future troop levels in Iraq.
A White House spokeswoman (Dana Perino)says Mr. Bush has been consulting with his national security team about recommendations made by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus.
In an interview earlier this week, General Petraeus said U.S. combat troops could be withdrawn from Baghdad by next July if security gains hold.
U.S. officials say Mr. Bush's top defense aides have recommended a withdrawal of one combat brigade from Iraq -- but not until next February. The officials say the defense aides also proposed that a combat brigade be sent to Afghanistan early next year instead of Iraq.
U.S. commanders have expressed hope that Iraq's sharp drop in violence will
free up more U.S. forces to fight an escalating insurgency in Afghanistan.
