씨리아의 바시르 알-아사 대통령이 터키의 중재로 이스라엘에 직접 평화협상 제안서를 보냈다고 말했습니다.
아사드 대통령은 4일 시리아의 다마스커스에서 열린 프랑스와, 터키, 카타르, 그리고 시리아가 참가한 지역 평화 관련 정상회담에서 이같이 밝혔습니다.
아사드 대통령은 제안서에는 '골란 고원'으로 부터의 이스라엘의 철수 요구를 담고 있습니다. 골란 고원은 이스라엘이 1967년 중동전쟁에서 점령한 전략적인 요충지입니다.
이번 회담에 참석 중인 니콜라 사르코지 프랑스 대통령은 이란에 핵무기 개발을 중단할 것을 경고했습니다. 사르코지 대통령은 이스라엘은 이란을 공격할 수 있기 때문에 이란은 핵 무기 개발로 더 큰 위험을 자초하고 있다고 말했습니다.
아사드 대통령은 시리아의 오랜 동맹국인 이란은 민간용 핵 개발계획을 추구하고 있을 뿐이라고 말했습니다.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says Damascus has sent proposals to Israel through Turkish mediators, aimed at initiating direct peace talks with the Jewish state.
Mr. Assad spoke today (Thursday) in Damascus at a summit on regional peace issues that brought together the leaders of France, Turkey, Qatar and Syria.
He said the proposals include a call for Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy also spoke at the summit. He warned Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons. He also said Tehran is taking a major risk by seeking atomic weapons because Israel could attack Iran, triggering what the French leader called a "catastrophe."
President Assad said Iran, a long-time Syrian ally, is merely pursuing a civilian nuclear program.
