Oil prices have fallen below 109 dollars a barrel in early trading today (Wednesday),
as concerns eased over the impact of Hurricane Gustav on U.S. oil installations
in the Gulf Coast.
The price fell in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange in Singapore on light sweet crude for October delivery. It also fell in trading in London for Brent crude oil delivery in October.
Oil prices have fallen steadily since mid-July, when the price hit a record high of 147 dollars, 27 cents a barrel. Worries that a declining global economy would lead to a fall in demand for crude, along with a rising U.S. dollar, led to the fall in oil prices.
Investors were concerned prices would rise again if oil refineries in the Gulf Coast were severely damaged by Hurricane Gustav. But initial reports say the installations appear to have survived the storm's onslaught.
