Shawn Johnson of the United States won the final event in the women's gymnastics competition, taking gold in the balance beam. She edged fellow-American Nastia Luikin, who earned the silver.
Chinese gymnast Li Xiaopeng won his second gold medal in Beijing by taking the top spot in the men's parallel bars. Zou Kai narrowly edged American Jonathan Horton to win the high bar competition, while his China teammate Lu Chunlong took gold in the men's trampoline.
On the track, Dawn Harper of the United States won gold in the women's
100-meter hurdles, with a personal best time of 12-point-five-four seconds. Her
favored teammate Lolo Jones was leading when she clipped the penultimate hurdle
and staggered to a seventh-place finish.
Reigning world champion Christine Ohuruogu of Britain captured the women's
