16일 오전 중국 베이징 국가아쿠아틱센터에서 펼쳐진 2008 베이징 올림픽 수영 남자 접영 100m 결승에서 미국의 마이클 펠프스는 세르비아의 밀로라드 카비치를 단 0.01초 차로 제치고 우승을 차지했습니다. 첫 50m 지점을 턴 할때 7위로 처진 펠프스는 마지막 50m에서 맹추격을 벌였습니다.
펠프스가 간발의 차이로 승리하자 세르비아의 카비치는 판정에 의문을 제기했지만, 국제수영연맹은 이의제기를 받아들이지 않았습니다. 펠프스가 이번 올림픽에서 우승과 동시에 신기록을 세우지 못한 경기는 이번 남자 접영 100m가 유일합니다.
여자 800m 자유형 결승에서는 영국의 레베카 에들링턴이 8분 14초 10으로 골인하며 19년 묵은 가장 오래된 세계기록을 깼습니다.
짐바브웨의 커스티 코벤트리는 여자 배영 200m에서 2분 5초 24로 금메달을 확보하며 세계 신기록을 세웠습니다.

U.S. swimmer Michaelhas won his seventh gold medal at the Beijing Games - in perhaps his closest race - to tie (U.S. swimmer) Mark Spitz's record for gold medals at a single Olympics.
Phelps won the 100 meter butterfly today (Saturday)by one one-hundredth
of a second over Serbia's Milorad Cavic. Phelps was in seventh place as he came
to the turn in the two-lap event.
The race was so close the Serbian swimmer lodged a protest with the Olympic
committee. However, the International Aquatics Federation overruled the appeal
and ruled Phelps was the winner. The race was the first victory of these games
in which Phelps has not set a world record.
Rebecca Adlington of Britain broke Janet Evans's 19-year-old world record on
her way to winning the 800-meter freestyle race in eight minutes, 14-point-one
seconds. The record had stood since August 20, 1989.
Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe set a world record of her own, winning gold in the
women's 200-meter backstroke in two minutes, five-point-24 seconds.
Brazil's Cesar Cielo Filho won the gold medal in the men's 50-meter freestyle
race (21.30 seconds).
