미국에 본부를 둔 인권단체와 서방국 기자들은 중국 공안이 올림픽 기간 베이징에서 합법적인 시위 허가를 요청했던 중국인 활동가를 체포했다고 14일 밝혔습니다.
인권단체 '휴먼 라이츠 워치'는 이 날 중국 정부가 58살의 지 시준 씨를 즉각 석방할 것을 촉구했습니다. 지 씨는 지난 8일 베이징 경찰서를 방문해 베이징의 시위 지정 공원 세 곳에서의 시위 허가를 요청했습니다. 이후 11일 허가 여부를 확인하기 위해 경찰서를 다시 방문한 지 씨는 보안 요원에 의해 연행돼 건물에서 끌려나왔습니다.
경찰서 당국자들은 활동가의 억류 사실을 부인했지만 그의 행방은 확인하지 않았습니다. 베이징에서의 시위 허가를 요청한 또 다른 중국 시민들 역시 고문을 당하거나 억류됐습니다. 지금까지 올림픽 개최 기간 중 지정된 시위 장소에서는 단 한 차례도 시위가 열리지 않았습니다.

A U.S. -based human rights group and western journalists say Chinese police
have detained a Chinese activist who applied to demonstrate legally in Beijing
during the Olympics.
Human Rights Watch called on China's government Wednesday to release 58-year-old
Ji Sizun immediately.
Ji went to a Beijing police station last Friday to request a permit for a
protest in one of Beijing's three designated protest parks.
When Ji returned to the station on Monday to check on his application, security
agents detained him and escorted him from the building. Police officials at the
station deny detaining the activist, but did not confirm his whereabouts.
Several other Chinese citizens who applied to protest in Beijing also have been
harassed or detained.
No protests have been held at the designated zones so far.
