Lebanese security officials say a bomb has exploded in the northern port city of Tripoli, killing at least 16 people, including nine soldiers.
At least 31 people also were wounded in today's (Wednesday's) blast.
Officials say the bomb was planted beside a civilian passenger bus that was also carrying Lebanese soldiers.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but some officials suspect it is a political message because of its timing.
The explosion follows weeks of sectarian fighting in Tripoli that has killed dozens of people. It took place hours before a landmark visit to Syria by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.
Tuesday, Lebanon's national unity Cabinet received a parliamentary vote of confidence following a debate on a controversial government policy that allows the Shi'ite opposition group Hezbollah to keep its weapons.
