러시아 군, 그루지아 영내로 계속 진격 (E)


러시아 장갑차와 군병력은 지난 6일간의 전투종식을 위해 유럽이 중재한 정전합의에도 불구하고 13일 그루지아 영토 내부로 더욱 깊숙히 진격했습니다.

그루지아 당국과 현지에 나가있는 취재기자들은 그루지아 군사 요충지인 고리 시가 러시아 병사들과 준 군사부대에 의해 약탈당했다고 보도했습니다. 러시아 군대는 그루지아의 수도 트리빌리 시로 일시 진격한 뒤 발길을 돌렸습니다.

그루지아 흑해 연안 항구도시, 포티에서 기자들은 러시아 군이 그곳에 정박해 있던 해안경비대 선박들 폭탄을 투척했다고 말했습니다.

유엔은 그루지아 문제를 논의하기위한 나토외무장관 긴급 회의를 소집했습니다. 나토는 이번 긴급회의에 러시아는 참석하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 한편 미국 국방부 관리들은 이에 대한 군사작전에 항의하기 위해 앞서 예정되었던 러시아와의 합동 군사훈련이 취소되었다고 말했습니다.

앞서 미하일 사카쉬빌리 그루지아 대통령은 CNN 방송과의 인터뷰에서 러시아군이 그루지아의 수도 포위 계획을 세운 듯 하다고 말하고 그루지아군이 수도를 지키기 위한 총력 태세를 갖추고 있으며 이를 위해 마지막 피 한방울까지 흘릴 각오가 돼 있다고 밝혔습니다.

Russian troops and armor pushed further into Georgia today (Wednesday), despite a European-brokered truce aimed at ending six days of fighting between the two countries.

Georgian authorities and correspondents at the scene report that the strategic town of Gori was looted and pillaged by Russian troops and paramilitaries, who briefly continued on toward the Georgian capital Tbilisi before turning back.

To the west, reporters in the Georgian Black Sea port of Poti say Russian troops bombed several Coast Guard boats moored there. The commercial part of the harbor has been under a Russian naval blockade for several days.

The United States has called for a emergency meeting of NATO foreign ministers to discuss the crisis in Georgia. NATO says the meeting will open Tuesday and that Russia will not attend. U.S. defense officials say upcoming joint military exercises with Russia have been canceled to protest military operations in Georgia.

European Union foreign ministers meeting in Brussels agreed today to consider sending observers to monitor a cease-fire in Georgia. Georgian Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili, who attended the meeting, urged EU members to provide assistance and not to abandon her country. In New York, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced concern for the humanitarian situation in the region.

Georgia and Russia have agreed to the main points of a French-brokered peace plan that calls for the withdrawal of forces from two Georgian breakaway regions, and free access for humanitarian aid workers. Russia insists it has not violated the truce.

South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s, but have not been internationally recognized.
