중국 베이징에서 제29회 하계 올림픽이 성대한 막을 올린 가운데 지구촌 곳곳에서는 중국의 인권 정책에 항의하는 시위가 벌어졌습니다. 한국 서울에서는 탈북자 강제 북송 중지를 촉구하는 집회가 벌어졌으며, 미국과 인도, 네팔, 영국, 프랑스 등지에서도 중국의 인권 기록을 규탄하는 시위가 벌어졌습니다.
베이징 올림픽 개막일인 8일 서울 효자동의 중국 대사관 앞에서 탈북자 강제 북송을 중단할 것을 호소하는 집회가 열렸습니다. 이 날 집회를 주최한 기독교 시민운동 단체인 '기독교 사회책임' 산하 탈북 동포회는 후진타오 중국 국가주석에게 보내는 공개 서한을 중국 대사관 측에 전달했습니다.
후진타오 주석에게 보내는 서한에는 중국내 탈북자들의 강제북송을 중지할 것과 탈북자들이 한국 등 원하는 나라로 갈 수 있도록 출국을 허용할 것을 촉구하고, 탈북여성들의 인신매매를 방지하고, 또한 감금 상태에 있는 북한 인권 운동가들을 조속히 석방할 것을 촉구하는 내용이 담겨 있습니다.
한편 중국 베이징에서 화려한 올림픽 개막식이 거행되고 있던 그 시간, 이 곳 워싱턴 주재 중국 대사관 앞 거리에는 중국의 인권 정책에 항의하는 구호가 울려 퍼졌습니다.
이 날 시위는 프랑스 파리에 본부를 둔 인권 단체 '국경없는 기자들'의 주도로 벌어진 것입니다. 언론의 자유를 옹호하는 '국경 없는 기자들'의 탈라 다우라챠히 씨는 중국 정부가 이번 올림픽과 관련해 언론의 자유를 확대하겠다던 약속을 지키지 않았다고 말했습니다.
다우라챠히 씨는 이번 올림픽은 화합를 토대로 한 것이 아니라고 말했습니다. 이번 올림픽은 언론인과 인터넷 블로그 이용자, 반체제 인사들에 대한 부당한 대우와 투옥, 불공평을 기반으로 한다는 것입니다.
다우라차히 씨는 이번 주 들어 일본인 방송기자 두 명이 공격을 받았다고 말했습니다. 중국 언론은 이번 사건과 관련해 당국자의 논평을 전혀 전하지 않고 있습니다.
미국의 태디스 맥카터 하원의원은 이 날 연설에서 중국의 전반적인 인권 기록을 비난했습니다.
공화당 소속으로 미시간주 출신인 맥카터 하원의원은 인류의 자유를 옹호하기 위해 노력하는 것이라고 말했습니다. 세계 여러 나라의 자유를 증진시키고 보전하는 것은 바로 이 곳 미국에 있는 미국인들의 자유를 보장하는 것이라고 맥카터 하원의원은 설명했습니다.
이 날 미국과 프랑스, 홍콩 등 세계 곳곳에서 벌어진 시위는 대부분 티벳의 자유를 옹호하기 위한 것이었습니다. 전 세계 티벳인 망명자들과 지지자들은 지난 3월 티벳의 수도 라사에서 독립 시위가 발생한 이후 티벳인들에게 강력한 지지를 표명해 왔습니다. 8일 워싱턴의 미국 주재 중국 대사관 앞에 모인 시위자들은 중국 정부가 티벳에서 고문과 살해, 학살을 자행했다고 비판했습니다.
베이징 올림픽 이틀째인 9일에는 베이징 시내 텐안먼 광장에서 외국인 5명이 친 티베트 시위를 벌였습니다. 미국인 3명과 캐나인인 1명, 독일인 1명으로 구성된 시위대는 뉴욕에 본부를 둔 '자유 티베트를 위한 학생들' 소속인 것으로 알려졌습니다. 이 단체는 시위대가 티베트를 상징하는 기를 몸에 두르고 광장 바닥에 드러누웠으며, 지나가는 행인들에게 취지를 설명하기도 했다고 전했습니다. 이들 시위대는 즉각 중국 공안에 의해 연행된 것으로 알려졌습니다.
앞서 이번 주 중국 외교부는 중국의 국내 문제에 간섭하는 어떤 발언이나 행위에도 반대한다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.

As the Summer Olympics began in Beijing Friday, protests against China's human rights policies were held around the world. VOA's Kent Klein reports from the protest in Washington.
At the precise moment the Olympics' opening ceremonies were beginning in Beijing several dozen people were gathered in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington to object to China's alleged abuses of numerous groups. It was one of numerous demonstrations against Chinese policies in cities around the world.
The protesters shouted "Stop the killings in Tibet!" "Shame on China!" "Shame, shame, China shame!"
Tala Dowlatshahi, from the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders, which organized the protest, said China has not kept its promise to allow greater press freedom in conjunction with the Olympics. "This is not an Olympics based on unity. It's an Olympics based on injustice, imprisonment, unfair treatment of journalists and internet bloggers and dissidents."
Dowlatshahi says, among other abuses, two Japanese television journalists, one from Nippon Television and one from Shimbun, were attacked in China this week.
Media reports from China do not mention any comments from authorities on this incident.
Republican U.S. Congressman Thaddeus McCotter was among the other speakers who blasted China's record on human rights in general. "We stand for the freedom of our fellow human beings, and that we realize that the promotion and preservation of liberty throughout the world ensures it here in America for ourselves," he said.
China's Foreign Ministry said this week it opposes "any words or acts" that interfere in the country's internal affairs.
Some of the demonstrators in Washington were protesting the Chinese government's opposition to the Falun Gong meditation and exercise movement. Beijing considers Falun Gong a cult.
Most of the demonstration concerned Tibet and demonstrators shorted slogans such as "Free Tibet now!" "Stop the killings in Tibet!" "Stop the genocide in Tibet!" Tibetan exiles and other people throughout the world have been showing their support for the uprising that began in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, in March.
Protesters in Washington accused the Beijing government of torture, murder and genocide in Tibet.
