The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, has received Iran's response to an offer from major world powers of incentives if Iran stops sensitive nuclear work.
An official in Solana's office today (Tuesday)said the foreign policy chief and representatives from the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States)plus Germany will now analyze Iran's letter.
Details of the Iranian response have not been released.
Earlier today, the United States warned of additional measures if Iran failed to give a positive answer. Britain also says it supports increased sanctions.
The world powers had given Iran an informal deadline of August second to accept the incentives. Iran did not give a definitive answer by the deadline, and the world powers demanded a written response by today.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad maintains that Tehran is ready to talk but not ready to stop enriching uranium.
