Pakistani military officials say at least 25 militants and five soldiers have
been killed during continued clashes in the country's northwest tribal region,
despite a peace deal between militants and the local government.
The latest fighting took place early today (Wednesday) near Matta in Swat Valley. Military officials say troops responded after militants attacked a security checkpoint in the area. A spokesman for pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Fazlullah (Muslim Khan) confirmed the clash but said the number of militants killed was much lower.
In a statement, the army said security forces have been ordered to take appropriate measures to counter increased hostile activities by militants.
On Tuesday, militants captured 30 security personnel during an ambush on a checkpoint in Swat Valleyin North West Frontier Province. The violence prompted authorities today to declare an indefinite 24-hour curfew in the former tourist region.
