지난 2003년 이후 처음으로 한국에서 뼈있는 미국산 쇠고기 수입이
29일 재개됐습니다.
이날 도착한 갈비를 포함해 1.5톤의 미국산 쇠고기는 앞으로 약 2주동안 검역을 받은 뒤, 다음 달 국내시장에 유통될 예정이라고 한국 당국은 밝혔습니다.
미국산 쇠고기의 주요 수입국이었던 한국은 지난 2003년 미국산 소에서 광우병이 발견되면서 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 전면 중단했습니다. 미국산 뼈없는 쇠고기 수입은 지난해 잠시 재개됐었으나 쇠고기에서 뼈조각이 발견됨에 따라 다시 중단됐습니다.
이명박 한국 대통령은 지난 4월 거의 모든 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 재개하기로 미국과 합의했습니다.
한국에서는 지난 5월초부터 미국과의 쇠고기 협상에 반대하는 수만 명의 시민들이 한국 정부가 광우병 우려를 무시하고 있다며 거의 매일 시위를 벌였습니다.
미국은 한국과 추가협상을 벌인 결과, 30개월 미만의 쇠고기만 한국에 수출하기로 했습니다.

A shipment of American beef with bones has arrived in South
Korea -- the first such shipment to that country since 2003.
Officials said the one-point-five-ton shipment, which includes cuts such as
ribs, will undergo quarantine inspections for about two weeks before being
released to local markets for sale next month.
Once a leading importer of U.S. beef, South Korea banned U.S. beef imports in
2003 after a cow in the U.S. was found to have mad cow disease. Boneless beef
imports were briefly resumed last year but stopped after bone fragments were
found in the meat.
In April President Lee Myung-bak signed a deal with the United States to resume
nearly all U.S. beef imports.
Since early May, the beef deal has been a rallying point for tens of thousands
of people who have demonstrated to protest the accord and other government
decisions. They say the government ignored fears of mad cow disease.
