유럽연합은 오는 22일 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 열리는 외교장관 회담에서 짐바브웨에 대한 제재 확대 원칙에 합의할 것으로 알려졌습니다.
유럽연합 외교관들은 17일 짐바브웨에 대한 제재에는 로버트 무가베 대통령 측과 연계된 더 많은 수의 개인과 기업에 대한 여행 금지와 자산 동결 등이 포함될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
현재 유럽연합은 무가베 대통령과 1백 명 이상의 지지자 들에 대한 제재를 시행하고 있습니다.
한편, 짐바브웨 집권당과 야당은 정치적 위기 상황 타개를 위한 실질적인 회담 개최 관련 협정에 조만간 조인할 예정입니다.

야당 대표인 모르간 찬기라이는 회담 개최 조건에 자신의 지지자들에 대한 폭력 사태 중단과 정치범 석방이 포함돼야 한다고 주장해왔습니다. 찬기라이는 또 중재자 지명에는 타보 음베키 남아프리카 공화국 대통령을 제외할 것을 촉구했습니다. 야당은 음베키 남아공대통령이 무가베 대통령 쪽에 치우쳐 있다고 밝혔습니다.

Diplomats say the European Union has agreed in principle to widen sanctions
against Zimbabwe when the bloc's foreign ministers meet in Brussels on Tuesday.
EU diplomats today (Thursday) say the sanctions will likely involve
travel bans and asset freezes on more individuals and companies connected to
President Robert Mugabe's government.
Currently, the EU has sanctions against Mr. Mugabe and more than 100 supporters
of his government.
Zimbabwe's ruling party and the opposition are expected to sign an agreement
soon that could lead to substantial talks on ending the country's ongoing
political crisis.
Mr. Mugabe was re-elected last month in a widely-condemned run-off vote in
which he was the only candidate.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dropped out a few days before the election
after many of his supporters were killed in violence he said was
state-sponsored.
President Mugabe's ZANU-PF party and the opposition Movement for Democratic
Change (MDC) are negotiating conditions for the talks.
