다나 페리노 미 백악관 대변인은 이번 방문은 이란 핵문제를 외교적으로 해결하겠다는 약속을 지키려는 미국의 의지를 보여주기 위한 일회성 방문이라고 말했습니다.
미국은 이란이 우라늄 농축을 중단할 때까지는 이란의 핵 프로그램에 대한 어떠한 회담에도 참석하지 않겠다며 거부해왔습니다.
미국 국무부의 숀 맥코맥 대변인은 이날 번스 차관의 이번 방문이 이란의 우라늄 농축 중단 이전에는 어떤 진지한 논의도 하지 않겠다는 부시 대통령 행정부의 입장을 바꾸는 것은 아니라고 말했습니다.

The White House says a senior U.S. diplomat will attend international talks with Iran on Tehran's disputed nuclear program in Switzerland Saturday.
In a shift in long-standing policy, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino today (Wednesday) said Under Secretary of State William Burns will join a meeting with Iran's top nuclear negotiator (Saeed Jalili) and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Geneva.
She said Burns's trip will be a "one-time" occurrence to demonstrate Washington's commitment to resolving the nuclear dispute diplomatically. But she stressed that Burns would go to the meeting to "listen" -- not to negotiate.
The U.S. has previously refused to attend any talks with Tehran on its nuclear program until it stops sensitive nuclear activities.
U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack today said Burns's visit does not change the Bush administration's position that Iran must suspend uranium enrichment before serious dialogue can begin.
